“My name is Antonia Amato, and I am a first year medical student at UNSW’s Rural Clinical School in Port Macquarie, I have also been a part of ATYP workshops for the past year.
In my spare time, I am working on a film project that is very close to my heart.
“My project is about communicating the lives and real stories of a range of adolescents living in Australia. I aim to create a series of “Coming-of-Age” short films/feature length films which represent and celebrate the innate diversity of Australia’s adolescent society.
“What drove me towards this project is the lack of representation of growing up in Australian communities, especially ones of rural, linguistic and culturally diverse backgrounds and influences. When I think of Coming-of-Age stories, I picture films such as Lady Bird, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and of course, Dead Poets Society, my all-time favourite movie. However, personally, I could never really relate to, or draw guidance from any of the movies in this genre, and I am certain that I am not alone in this regard.
“A huge part of this project will involve me working closely with the people who demonstrate a similar passion for the performing arts and storytelling as I do. They will have a big role in the creative process and guide the writing of the story/screenplay.
“Below is a Google Form for young people to submit an Expression of Interest to be a part of this project and tell their story. I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me distribute it.
