Cowra Civic Centre welcomes Nicholas Gentile & weekly workshops
Cowra Civic Centre is proud to welcome composer, singer, conductor and teacher, Nicholas Gentile for their artist in residence program.
Nicholas will be composing new music for World Peace Day 2020 drawing on Cowra’s history and role in peace. The music will then be launched on Monday, September 21, 2020 – World Peace Day – in a unique way reaching the community of the town of Cowra. He will also be running composition workshops for secondary students and for adults over the 4 weeks he is in residence at Cowra Civic Centre.
COMPOSITION FOR WORLD PEACE DAY
Cowra has an extensive history and story to tell about the role of peace. Drawing on the events of the Cowra Breakout with the Japanese and Italian prisoners of war, the World Peace Bell, the Japanese Gardens, Peace Precinct and ongoing commitment to international understanding, Nicholas will compose new music that reflects all of this. He will also include the World Peace Bell (outside Cowra Civic Centre) as an instrument in the composition.
Once the music is composed he will coordinate a recording of the music which will then be launched on World Peace Day in September.
World Peace Day: Monday 21 September, 2020
During his 4 week residency, Nicholas will be running composition weekly workshops for secondary students and for adults. Some music knowledge is required including basic music notation. You may want to compose for a solo instrument, for a choir, for a small ensemble or band, or even for an orchestra – Nicholas will give you tips and techniques for composing over the 4 weeks of the workshops.
Workshops will be held at Cowra Civic Centre and Covid-19 Safety Guidelines will be in place. These workshops will be free but a 4-week commitment from participants is required.
