Upholstery & Furniture Restoration Workshop

Sat 26 June at 10:00 am - Sun 27 June at 4:30 pm

This course offers a wonderful introduction to upholstery and timber restoration. Bring your own project to work on.

About this Event

This is a bring-your-own-project workshop. Projects can be varied from structurally sound chairs ready for re-upholstery, to chairs that need a fix and timber rejuvenation. Projects can also include small timber furniture items, such as bedside tables, small occasional tables etc.

Tuition is tailored to each individual project, however demonstrations will be given for all techniques covered in class: in this way, students will be introduced to a broader set of skills above and beyond the techniques needed to for their own project.

• You will learn the correct and safe procedures on how to strip upholstered chairs.

• You will learn about the upholstery techniques needed for your individual project.

• You will learn about the different approaches to restoring timber furniture.

• You will learn how to fix minor repairs needed for your individual project.

• You will acquire the confidence and skills to tackle new projects on your own

$440 per person

Fees include use of tools on the day and most basic materials. Please note: Stuffings (foam or loose fibre), springs, cushion inserts, timber for repairs and timber finishing products are not included in the course fees.

**projects that include timer restorations will have limited access to the reupholstery element of the workshop due to time constraints.

Techniques covered may include:

• How to rejuvenate the timber finish on your chosen project

• How to make minor repairs to a structurally un-sound chair

• Webbing a seat for traditional or modern furniture.

• How to create a traditionally sprung a seat.

• Cutting and shaping foam for a professional finish

• Cutting and shaping top fabric for professional recovery finish

• How to make continuous piping

• Making zippered box cushion covers

Learning a traditional and hand made craft is a wonderful way to reconnect with a body- centred way of working and offers a respite from today’s mind-centred busy lifestyle. Like any hand-made craft, upholstery and timber restoration is process based, and cannot be ‘fast tracked’.

Your chair should have no more than 2 flat planes (a seat and a back). Arms and curves are much harder and take longer to achieve and are not suitable projects for the workshop timeframe and level.

Projects can include chairs that need timber restoration or minor repairs, however please be aware that if you project needs timber finishing work this will reduce the time available to spend on the upholstery aspect of your chair.

Each chair and project is as individual as the person doing it, and the variables are many. Images of your chosen piece are required by the tutors in the lead up to the workshop start date. These will give some indication, however the exact nature of what is required to restore your chair cannot be fully established until day one of class during the strip-down process. For this reason we cannot guarantee that you will complete your project within the 12 hours of workshop time.
