The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra

Sun 19 September at 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

On his first visit to England and the Scotland, the 20 year-old Felix Mendelssohn was inspired to write his Hebrudes Overture. The music portrays the heaving ocean and is one of the most famous works of his composer – full of wonderful melodies and joy. Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, is written for violin, viola and chamber orchestra. The music is in parts grand, lyrical and playful, and a much-loved work. During the Second World War amd under occupation, the Finnish Composer, Sibelius wrote this anthemic, passionate and patriotic work – Finlandia. His masterpiece, and a terrific work to complete the first half of the program. How do you paint Australia’s vast landscape, its changing seasons, its ancient indigenous culture, in musical sounds? In Kakadu, Peter Sculthorpe does just this. Benjamin Britten’s Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra spotlights each of the instrumental groups before the full orchestra comes together for a rousing finale. In a special performance, the work will be narrated by Marian Arnold.
