THE COLOURFUL SHAPE OF FEELING BY KATE OWEN

Sat 3 June - Sun 2 July

Curated by Rosby’s Kay Norton-Knight for Rosby Gallery – Kate Owen’s solo exhibition, The Colourful Shape Of Feeling, is a journey through a garden of abstract florals and vistas.

Unintentional in their outcomes, Owen’s vivid acrylic works delve into her subconcious as marks are made in layers – inspired by the visual vocabulary of imagery from her property in North West New South Wales. The scultural forms of Prickly Pear, weeds and brambles then a little pop of colour from a wild flower are all part of her language.

Owen’s intuitive process allows an escape from the day-to-day, for both her and the viewer. Underpinning this body of work is the reflection on generational shifts – from being a child to taking care of ones parents. The works bring joy with clever play on words bringing meaning both personal and open to interpretation.

To wander this field of colour is to experience works of the moment and of moments, it is an invitation from the artist to peer through these windows of solitude.

ARTIST BIO

Kate Owen has established a cult following with her bold, bright and beautiful paintings that elicit pure joy.

Growing up on a property near Moree in Northern NSW, Kate travelled extensively with her work in fashion, but it was the space living rurally allows both mentally and physically which saw her settle with her husband in the area to raise their two boys. In 2018 Kate built her studio which she considers her sanctuary. A purpose built oasis of peace and positivity where she can scribble and splash her emotions onto canvas. Kate paints intuitively from impressions of her memories of things seen around her daily and in her travels.

Starting by playing with colours on paper to find a palette which appeals, as she paints the work takes on a life of its own and dictates a certain path which is never apparent from the start. Having always felt compelled to create. Kate has tried her hand at many things including fashion, homewares and food, but is now enjoying painting exclusively.

Part of Kate’s creative process is working quickly to capture spontaneous gestural marks using acrylic paints which dry quickly. Large brushes help to facilitate this. Scribbling with graphite and oil sticks or scratching back through layers of paint offer an experience of freedom and exhilaration during the work. In many Kate Owen works you will find the use of collage. This is a favourite medium for Kate which she finds incredibly therapeutic and satisfies her need to arrange forms to create a visually pleasing aesthetic.
