Showground Sketches: Intergenerational drawing workshop
Wed 19 April at 10:00 am - 12:00 pm$15.00
Join illustrator Alexander Barnes-Keoghan for a unique intergenerational drawing workshop at the Orange Showgrounds
For six weeks in 1941, around 400 German and Austrian men fleeing persecution in Nazi Germany known as the Dunera boys were interned at the Orange Showgrounds. While there, many drew and painted their experiences using the limited materials they had available.
Designed especially for children and their adults to learn together, this session will introduce participants to a range of drawing techniques and exercises. Using the Orange Showgrounds as our backdrop, participants will also have a chance to reflect on the story of the Dunera boys and their time in Orange during the Second World War.
This activity is designed for a child aged 8 and over and an adult carer to attend together.
About Enemy Aliens: the Dunera boys in Orange, 1941
In September 1940, more than 2000 “enemy aliens” were transported from Britain to Australia on board the HMT Dunera. Interned in camps in regional New South Wales and Victoria, the story of the Dunera boys, is an intrinsic part of the history of Australia in the Second World War and in its aftermath.
This exhibition, featuring never-before-seen artworks by the Dunera boys, tells the little-known story of the internees’ time at the Orange Showgrounds in 1941.
Each ticket for this event is for a pair (child AND adult participant). You will be asked to provide names of both participants. If you have two children, each child will need to be accompanied by an adult and each pair requires their own ticket.
