Pollinators: School Holiday Workshops

Tue 6 April - Fri 16 April

Discover the power of pollinators this school holidays with a series of art-making and environmental education workshops presented by Orange Regional Gallery and Orange Regional Museum.

Each session will include a visit to the Pollinators exhibition at Orange Regional Museum followed by a hands-on activity in the West Room, Orange Regional Gallery. Children will learn about the crucial role that pollinators play in sustaining biodiversity and human health while getting to know some of our local plants and pollinating animals. There will also be time to admire the giant ‘swarm’ of artworks created by hundreds of local school children.

Pollinators is on show at Orange Regional Museum from 20 March – 9 May 2021.
Entry is FREE.

DIY Insect Hotel
Tuesday 6 April, 10am – 12:30pm
West Room, Orange Regional Gallery
Ages: 6+  Cost: FREE

Budding-builders will design and construct a luxury insect ‘hotel’ in this hands-on workshop. Children will learn about pollinating insects and how they can support them by providing shelter and their favorite nesting materials. Each child will take home a custom-built insect hotel, ready to welcome it’s first guests.

In Bloom – Botanical Drawing 
Wednesday 7 April, 10am – 12:30pm
West Room, Orange Regional Gallery
Ages: 8+  Cost: $20

Young artists will develop their observational skills and learn to draw what they see in this botanical drawing workshop. Children will dissect and inspect native flower specimens, examining their structure and then documenting them in a series of coloured pencil illustrations.

Mixed Media Birds, Bats, Bees and Beetles
Thursday 8 April, 10am-12:30pm 
West Room, Orange Regional Gallery
Ages: 6+  Cost: $20

Children will create their own mixed media pollinators in this creative workshop that explores, colour, pattern, and texture. Young artists will use reference images and their imagination to draw their chosen creatures before adding colour and detail using ink, crayon and collage.

(Seed) Bombs Away!
Tuesday 13 April, 10am – 11:30am and 1pm – 2:30pm
Ages: ALL (children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult) Cost: FREE

Learn more about local plants and pollinating animal species and then get busy (and a little bit grubby) making native seed bombs. These little packages of seeds, clay and soil can be thrown into hard-to-reach places where they will sit until conditions are right for them to spring into action, providing food and habitat for local pollinators.

Make a Butterfly Flutter-by 
Wednesday 14 April, 10am – 12:30pm
West Room, Orange Regional Gallery
Ages: 6+  Cost: $20

Design and build a rubber-band powered butterfly—that flies! Children will learn how to identify local pollinating butterfly species by their distinctive colours and patterns and then use them as inspiration for their designs.
