Macquarie Conservatorium Dubbo ROCK SCHOOL Holiday Workshop

Mon 3 July - Fri 7 July

Holiday activity for youth aged 11 to 18 years

Do you play in a band? Do you want to play in a band?

School’s in for young rock musos these school holidays at Macquarie Conservatorium’s Rock School.

Macquarie Conservatorium Dubbo presents a week of afternoon workshops for vocalists and players of electric guitar, bass guitar, drum-kit and keyboard who want to play in rock bands.

“Our first Rock School Holiday workshop was a great success last year, so we are thrilled to run this workshop again for local youth in the upcoming July school holidays,” says Macquarie Conservatorium’s Director Vivienne Winther.

Participants will fine-tune their rock band skills with the expert guidance of a great team of experienced local band musicians and teachers. The team includes well-known local band musician and song-writer Clinton Hoy, and bass player James Collingridge, who is also a Macquarie Conservatorium teacher.

“It’s a great opportunity for the many young people out there who are interested in playing together in bands,” says James Collingridge.

“Kids can come into the workshop as an individual and we will match them into a band, or if they already have their own band organised, they can stay together in that band. And we’re also happy to welcome back any of the players from last year’s workshop to have another go!”

The workshop will be held at Macquarie Conservatorium, corner of Darling and Bultje St Dubbo, where’s there’s plenty of room for bands to rock.

Participants need experience playing one of the following rock band instruments – electric guitar, electric bass guitar, drum-kit, keyboard; or have singing as their main focus. Participants can be at varying standards from elementary to more advanced on their chosen instrument, but it is important to note this workshop is not for beginners.

Song-writing is a big part of the workshop, with bands encouraged and mentored to write their own songs. Another feature of Rock School is working with a professional sound system and develop stage performance skills.

“We’ll be partnering with SOMAD, Dubbo’s peak body for live and original music, to give these young band players hands-on experience with a professional sound system,” says Vivienne Winther.

At the end of the workshop, the participants will give a showcase performance for family and friends at Macquarie Conservatorium.

The Conservatorium is also offering some Rock School scholarships for indigenous students and for female students. Anyone interested in being considered for a scholarship can indicate that on their registration form.

“Young musicians should register for Rock School now – registrations close on Friday 16 June, so don’t delay!” says Vivienne Winther.

Visit the Conservatorium’s website www.macqcon.org.au for more info and to register online for the workshop. A great way to spend the school holidays!
