Jill Yates: East Sydney Postmodernism, a survey of works from 1983-1988
Wed 14 June - Mon 14 August
Free
Textile artist Jill Yates is showcased in this retrospective exhibition that features a selection of screen-printed fabrics from the exhibition, Fabric of Life (1988), National Gallery Australia, Canberra, and her Merd International collaboration with Hugh Ramage (1983-1987). Other textiles from the period include Julia Raath.
Created during the heyday of Postmodernism, a 1980s art and architecture movement that was celebrated for its aesthetic of irony, appropriation and subversion, these screen printed textiles, referencing feminism, early Modernism, AGIT-PROP and the Marxist-Leninist Russian Revolution, date from the period that Yates worked in East Sydney.
