Spring this year came to the Outback of NSW as a triumphant roar. Almost overnight, an exuberance ran through me and those around me. The sudden delights of colour, the fluttering of fresh foliage on plum trees, the arresting sight of wattle in full bloom, unapologetically occupying centre stage against a blue sky, reminded us all that we are limitless possibilities.
Born in England, raised in Canada, and Jamila immigrated to Australia in 2010.
Prior to pursuing her childhood dream of being an artist she was an anthropologist in the resources sector, a career that took her all over the world.
She now calls Nyngan, NSW – the outback- home where she has a beautiful studio on the main street.
Jamila says her art pays homage to the colours, aromas, gestures and pause extended to us by flowers and trees in full bloom.
She paints freely with a palette knife, often starting a painting by making marks with sticks applying a very thick layer of oil paint and starts a visual journey.
Her process is akin to a stream of consciousness: one gestural mark leads to another, the colours change as they pick up the background colour or the adjacent marks; the painting emerges over a series of days.
