Exhibition: Capturing the Home Front – Life at Home in a World at War

Sun 7 July - Sun 11 August

An exhibition that pulls back the curtain and shines a light on life at home in World War II (WWII) as captured by famous American photojournalist Dorothea Lange and Australian photographers Samuel Hood, Edward Cranstone, Hedley Keith Cullen and Jim Fitzpatrick.

Forty-eight stunning framed photographs reproduced from national and international collections, reveal the remarkable parallels between Australia and the USA during the Pacific war including industry, family life, the role of women and Japanese internment.

These images range from candid records that capture the intimacy of unplanned encounters between photographer and subject, to modernist techniques used to portray industry, to the deliberately composed scenes of soft propaganda. A touring exhibition from the Australian National Maritime Museum Part of War and Peace in the Pacific 75 commemorating the 75th anniversary of WWII.

COWRA BREAKOUT 80TH Anniversary Heritage Display will feature photographs and several heritage items related to the Cowra PoW Camp and the Cowra Breakout. Most significant is the bugle (now part of the national collection at the Australian War Memorial) used by Japanese fighter pilot Hajime Toyoshima to signal the beginning of the mass breakout along with the iconic milk jug used to serve tea to escaped Japanese PoWs.

The 80th Anniversary of the Cowra Breakout serves as a poignant reminder as well as an occasion for commemoration of the enduring friendship between Cowra and Japan.
