“DRYLANDS – Sacred ground” – Exhibition by Joy Engelman
Thu 27 April - Sat 3 June
Free
“The drylands are the interface between the known and the unknown. They stand at the edge of order and chaos. Dust particles float into the ethereal realms and glint before disappearing; a scene that transfixes my gaze and leaves me enthralled. It is to me, the closest representation of a quantum reality – but then, how does one ‘paint the moving light of the desert.” – Engelman 2023
Engelman acknowledges the traditional owners of the lands that have inspired these works and thanks them for allowing passage into their lands: Wergia – Pink Lake, Adnyamathanha – Lake Frome, Barindji Nation – Murray Darling, Nagamini – Sturts Stony Desert, Barkindji/Paakantyi, Mutthi Mutthi and Ngiyampaa – Lake Mungo
A selection of works from Engelman’s travels across the outback over the past 12 years, these focus on the dry lakes and deserts, and are representational works of the energies and spirit she felt during my explorations. We live in amazing country unlike any other, a wide expanse of flatness filled with awe and colour, it reminds Engelman, she states, of driving through a large painting; the creation of a vast universal mind.
