Collection Focus: Elisabeth Cummings

Sat 25 November 2023, - Sun 28 January 2024,

Elisabeth Cummings lives and works in Wedderburn, NSW, surrounded by the Australian bush. Her work over the past six decades has made an indelible impression on Australian art.

Cummings recently donated a series of Elcho Island gouache studies to the Gallery to compliment her large painting After the Wet, Elcho Island (2004). This was generously followed by a further gift, a suite of 15 etchings shown here for the first time.

In this selection of paintings, gouaches and etchings we are presented with Cummings’ intimate responses to interiors alongside her vibrant encounters with landscapes from the bush surrounding Wedderburn to the rugged ranges of Arkaroola.

Cummings’ intuitive approach and her masterful palette provide beguiling colour combinations and discordant harmonies, which pulsate with her experience of place.
