Blood on Silk by Fiona Davies
Tue 16 August - Sun 2 OctoberFree
Blood on Silk consists of eight candy-striped ottomans upon which rest three or more hand sewing baskets, each re-lined with beaded floral fabrics, embroidered flowers, or oya/gold paper flowers over the original satin interiors of the baskets. These interventions reference the early textile material brought to the UK’s Victoria & Albert Museum by archaeologist Sir Aurel Stein from his expeditions in Dunhuang and Miran in China (1900-1930). His research suggests the textiles originally formed canopies or fields of flowers within Buddhist temples along the silk route. The relatively low height of the plinths/ottomans focuses the viewer’s attention onto the interiors of the baskets now relined with flowers.
