‘ABSTRACTION EXPRESSIONISM, LANDSCAPE’ WITH PETER GRIFFEN

Sat 19 November - Sun 20 November

DATE: Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th November 2022

TIME:  9.30am-4.00pm,

WHERE: Rosby Mud Hut, 122 Strikes Lane, Eurunderee MUDGEE

COST: $265 per student. Includes complimentary lunch with Rosby Wines

TUTOR: Peter Griffen

The workshop will begin with ‘abstract loosening up’ exercises – taking a line for a walk and splashing with colour – setting the tone for participants to work in their own individual ways throughout the workshop. Participants will be encouraged to think about free form flowing thoughts of the landscape to guide their hand to paint – possibly with excess paint – to dribble, splash and scrape however they like to respond to the landscape they are visualising. Images produced will be the result of abstracting and distorting, not attempts to copy. Unbridled imagination will be the key!

Students may bring photographs of landscapes to be used for reference. Other forms of media can be used as well to create including pastels, ink, crayon, etc. Many paintings and/or drawings can be worked on at one time and collage will be encouraged.

Demonstrations and appropriate suggestions will be made when needed. Reference material on contemporary art will be available. The use of intuition and free thinking will be particularly encouraged as well as the development of vivid colour.

On the second day participants will work in the same free and investigative way, perhaps starting new works and developing those already started.

Enjoy a weekend of hands-on experimental abstract painting in acrylic. Drawing media and techniques can be used as well. Loosen up and create where anything goes!

Suitable for all levels, beginner to advanced. Limited numbers – book your place early!

Peter Griffen is a highly experienced and accomplished artist. Born in Adelaide in 1948, Peter Griffen has been painting for forty years. He lives in his warehouse studio in the inner west of Sydney and travels throughout Australia and overseas exhibiting and teaching. The art of Peter Griffen is influenced as much by the classical painting of the Renaissance as by the serendipity of abstract expressionism. Indigenous art from different parts of the world (in particular Australia) and its relationship to the natural landscape influence his work also, producing powerful abstract images that speak from the past. Peter Griffen’s manifesto says that he believes that to make discoveries risks have to be taken and the traveller must get lost. He says a well-planned journey can only lead to an already known destination. And at some stage the painting must go out of control.
