Tom Buckland: Flightpaths
Sat October 17 - Sun December 6
Throughout human history, birds have played the roles of friend, foe and food: we share our world with them, they inhabit every continent and they hold great importance in literature and legend. In these uncertain times, what impact is climate change going to have on migratory bird species, and how does rapid change in the natural and built environment impact on birds and the complex relationships that we take for granted? Through a series of works made of bronze, cardboard and found objects, sculptor Tom Buckland seeks to respond to these questions and to explore our emotional, ethical and imaginative connection to the world of birds.
Buckland has strong connection to the Central West, having studied visual art at Bathurst and Orange TAFE campuses and, in 2011, winning the Countryscapes Essential Energy Youth Encouragement Award at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery. He graduated from the Australian National University, Canberra, with a Bachelor of Visual Arts with Honours in 2015 and was the recipient of the John and Elizabeth Baker Honours scholarship. Buckland has undertaken residencies at Cementa (Kandos, 2018), Fremantle Arts Centre (WA, 2017) and Canberra Contemporary Art Space (ACT, 2016). His work has featured in numerous exhibitions in Canberra, Orange, Bathurst, Melbourne and Fremantle.
