Sarah O’Sullivan: Resilience

Fri February 7 - Sun March 22

Free entry

Resilience is Lithgow-based ceramic artist Sarah O’Sullivan’s response to the fragility and the strength of the Australian landscape – its capacity to absorb disturbance and maintain its integrity as a functional ecosystem.

Many Australian ecosystems have evolved with resilience to regular disturbances such as bushfire, flood and drought cycles. O’Sullivan draws parallels to the ceramic medium in which soft clay is extracted from the earth and transformed into hard, stone-like porcelain after being subjected to the intensive firing process.

Individually, her ceramics represent different aspects of the natural Australian environment: disparate foliage, textures, seeds and shadows. Grouped together, the ceramics demonstrate the survival and subsequent rebirth of the environment — resilience.

O’Sullivan graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) from the National Art School, Sydney, in 2006. She has continued to hone her skills through mentorships with ceramic artist Robin Best, via the Object Gallery and the Australia Council Mentorship Program (2008), and with ceramic artist Sung Jae Choi, via the Korean Mentorship Program (2015). In 2014, O’Sullivan participated in a residency at the FONAS / Storrier Onslow studio, Paris.

Her work has featured in group exhibitions including at the Clayarch Museum (South Korea), Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Australian National University, Hazelhurst Regional Art Gallery, Noosa Regional Art Gallery, JamFactory (Adelaide) and National Art School.
