Salvatore Zofrea: Days of Summer

21 December – 9 February 2020
In 2012, Salvatore Zofrea donated a complete edition from his Days of Summer woodblock series to Orange Regional Gallery.
This selection from the original donation of 40 prints presents an extraordinary celebration of flora and fauna in Australia over the summer season. The artist drew inspiration from the bushland surrounding his mountain studio at Karrajong in the Blue Mountains in which Bellbirds, Bowerbirds, Wattle, Bottlebrush and Illawara Flame Trees abound.
For this series, the artist adopted a traditional Japanese printmaking technique of drawing onto a block of Jelutong wood and cutting away to form the printing block. An edition of 20 prints of each block were then hand printed onto Japanese Hitachi with black waterbased ink. Each woodcut print was then delicately hand coloured on the reverse of the paper, resulting in a unique and subtle effect in which the image appears suffused with colour.
Framing for this series was generously supplied by Orange Regional Arts Foundation.
