Orange Cemetery Walk – Cancelled (Covid-19)

Sat May 16 at 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Orange General Cemetery has been in continual use since 1853, with the earliest know burial Bridget Connelly in December 1853. The cemetery has more than 7000 headstones, providing a wealth of information about Orange’s history.

The headstones in Orange Cemetery provide a window to the past. They also tell the stories of accidents, drownings, murders, epidemics and childhood deaths. Participants will gain a glimpse of the world of gold miners, teamsters, and early pioneer settlers of the district, which include: the renowned Dalton’s from Ireland and the Moulder, Newman, Penhall, Lidster, Proudfoot and Hanrahan families.

Stonemasons from Orange, Sydney, Wellington, Bowenfels and Gundagai worked to create these monuments. Rose, shamrock and thistle motifs were carved into memorials to reflect the origins of the deceased. A broken column represented a life cut short, a draped urn represented death and sorrow.
