Land / Story

Sun August 30 - Sat September 26

Joy Engleman. An exploration of the flow of light, wind and water across the land.

For me as a painter, the most fascinating aspect of the Australian outback is the ‘light’! I can sit for hours and watch as the mood shilfts with the track of the sun across the land, the way lighht falls and picks up different areas of the landscape.

First it’s the sun on rocks, then a flight of birds, the tips of grasses, the distant hills, then it shifts and a salt pan appears and moves, a face appears on a rock and then as quickly as it came, it goes.

It’s a very different world, a world of quiet, vast expanses, the smallness of us against the universe, a timelessness and a loss of self. One feels part of it all moving forward into the vastness of space on a wee planet…..

But how to show this in my paintings? That is the question!

Recent years have seen an explosion of new art materials onto the market as metallic surfaces have become more normal and included as part of the wider art of building.

The iridescents shimmer and change with the light of day, the metal and glass flakes one can add to paints have expanded my ability to portray light, the metallic finishes provide beautiful shifting notes among the brushstrokes, and glass powders, just found, have given me a wow factor!

These artworks need light on them, not some shady corner! They are all UV coated so they won’t fade but by allowing light to fall on them at different times of day, they will provide the viewer with a similar feeling to that of sitting in the desert landscape.

So I invite you to come and see my first solo show in two years of recent explorations of light and energy across the Australian outback!

This is a rather special show I feel and now that covid is with us, we cannot have an opening night…… which for me is a terrible travesty as I really enjoy standing there discussing my art with all of you!

However, please keep an eye out on the gallery facebook page, as we are planning a one off afternoon floor talk for a very limited number of people (10 only)… so bookings will need to be made!

And of course, if you would like me to come and meet there with you at the gallery, I am more than happy if time allows! So just call me on 0427 618 953 and let’s see if it can happen!
