Welcome to our BIG list of arts and cultural events happening in the NSW Central West.
Anemoia: Nostalgia for a Time I’ve Never Seen
Fri October 4 - Mon November 4
Anemoia is the nostalgic feeling you get when you see or hear something from before your time. It is hearing a song from the ‘20s and being able to feel the swish of the beading on your flapper dress. It is seeing a sepia photo of horses and carriages and wishing you could lean on a tie up post and watch them go by. It’s smelling pasta and dreaming of an Italian Nonna you never had.
This exhibition expresses the anemoia Wendy Anne feels when she visits places in Lithgow created, and often closed, before she moved here. At the Blast Furnace she can feel the thump of the Davy Engine as it drives the Furnaces, she can smell the coal from the locomotives travelling the railways and hear the voices of miners and the girls working in the Small Arms Factory throughout the streets of Lithgow.
Wendy Anne moved to the Vale of Clwydd in Lithgow in 2008. Her love affair with Lithgow’s history began when one of her teaching colleagues suggested she visit the Blast Furnace. In 2010 she started the Lithgow Photography Group whose members took her all over the region to places she would never have found without a local. From 2011 to 2016 she was the Cultural Development Officer for Lithgow City Council which included managing Eskbank House Museum and working with other museums throughout the region. It was the small stories, people’s recollections that she really connected with and she realised places hold these stories for us.
Her current exhibition combines mixed media techniques with her signature loose sketching style. Rather than focusing on just one location they are based around themes such as railways, commerce and industry and include Lithgow’s surrounding towns and hamlets. They are Wendy Anne’s expressions of aneomia.
