Artspeak from Tracey: Cultural Tourism

from Tracey: the tourists want our culture

Cultural tourism is one of the economic opportunities for our region and Arts OutWest is working on projects and supporting activities in the region to assist development of this sector. When we talk about cultural tourism we are referring to a range of experiences: attending an arts performance, event of festival; seeing historic sites and museums; accessing the local Aboriginal culture. All of these things can be very enriching experiences, but have the added benefit of contributing substantially to the economic prosperity of our region. Research has shown that cultural tourists are worth more in financial terms than other visitors and that a large percentage of all visitors to any region choose to access cultural tourism attractions.
We have a lot to offer in the NSW Central West, with rich heritage but also a strong cultural and creative sector.

Arts OutWest is working with other organisations and businesses to strengthen the way that our cultural tourism can be made more visible.

There are also projects that we are assisting with, ranging from supporting the work in Cowra to produce an app telling some of the stories associated with the POW cemetery to supporting the development of an Inland Astro Trail. One of the important things to remember is that the wealth of cultural assets found in our experience do not only offer great tourism experiences for our visitors – they also shape the identity of our region and can add to our own positive interactions with our environment and our culture. Promoting our region’s cultural tourism offers value for everybody, residents and visitors alike.
