Highlight event. BRAG, from February 9. Harrie Fasher’s monumental sculpture The Last Charge captures the raw emotion of the last charge of the Light Horse at the Battle of Beersheba on October 31, 1917.

Exhibition opening Friday 9 February, 6pm Bathurst Regional Art Gallery.

This powerful and terrifying vision of cavalry in full flight evokes the roar and chaos of battle, and the indefatigable bond between horse and rider. Forged from rusted and twisted steel rods, Fasher’s horses embody the human, channelling the violence and determination that led to the victory at Beersheba. First exhibited in the 2017 Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi, The Last Charge is a potent and poignant memorial to the horses and cavalrymen of the 4th Light Horse Brigade.

Vertical steel shards are key to the construction of the sculpture. They convey the violent, unimaginable destruction of modern warfare and occupy the space of the rider armed with lance, bayonet and rifle, whilst providing structural support to the horses arrested mid flight says Fasher.

Harrie Fasher based in Oberon NSW, is making her mark in sculpture. She produces large scale, steel sculptures that embody tension and movement, utilising both abstraction and figurative form, predominately the horse, to convey her message.

Fasher has participated in national and international residencies, including the Baer Art Centre Residency in Iceland and the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery’s Hill End Residency. In 2013 she travelled to the United Kingdom to undertake an artist in residency at the Butley Mills Bronze Foundry.

Passionate about the development of the arts within her rural community in NSW, Fasher facilitates steel sculpture workshops and public speaking programs. Her work has a local presence, with a permanent large scale public sculpture Our Light Horse installed in Oberon for the ANZAC Centenary 2015, and The Bird and I, acquired for the Forbes community through the Forbes Sculpture Acquisition Prize, 2015.

The opening event is Friday, 9 February 6pm @ BRAG. To be opened by Professor Amanda Lawson, Executive Dean, Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts, University of Wollongong.
