Stephen Champion new Chair of RANSW
Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre’s Manager Stephen Champion has been appointed the new Chair of Regional Arts NSW.
Regional Arts NSW (RANSW) is the state peak body and support agency for arts and cultural development in regional NSW.
Arts OutWest congratulations Stephen Champion on his new position as Chair of the Board of Regional Arts NSW. Stephen was appointed at the RANSW board meeting on Thursday 20 April, 2017.
Stephen Champion has been the Manager of the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre since 2003 and has worked professionally in the performing arts for thirty four years. He has been a director of RANSW for the past four years and most recently served as Deputy Chair.
As a performer Stephen was a core member of Circus Oz in its first six years, devised his own works and performed with many groups including the Meryl Tankard Dance Theatre, the Nimrod Theatre and Sydney Theatre Company. Stephen was an Associate Director with the Second Studio of Wroclaw, Poland (1986) and Associate Director and then Artistic Director of Jigsaw Theatre Company in Canberra (1988 – 1994). He has been a trainer for many companies including The Flying Fruit Fly Circus, La Boite Youth Theatre and NIDA. Prior to moving to Bathurst, Stephen was Domain Manager for the Sydney Festival for seven years, a Production Manager for the Sydney Olympic Arts Festival and Venue Manager of the Domain Live Site for the Olympic Coordination Authority.
The new Deputy Chair is Ben Roche, Director Engagement at Southern Cross University. David Dwyer will continue in his role as Treasurer.
Two new members were also appointed to the board: Sharni Jones, Manager, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Collection, Australian Museum; and Gavin Findlay, General Manager of the Canberra International Music Festival. Sharni and Gavin bring to the RANSW board art-form expertise and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts, as well as experience in public policy, stakeholder engagement and strategic development.
Stephen Champion thanked outgoing directors Peter White (outgoing Chair), Stephen Bradley and Naomi Messenger for their contributions to the RANSW board.
The CEO of RANSW, Elizabeth Rogers, said she looked forward to working with the new board to further the aims of promoting the value of the arts and artists in regional NSW and supporting the work of the regional arts development network. She added her thanks to outgoing directors and in particular the contribution of outgoing Chair, Peter White for his support and expertise in the delivery of the Aboriginal component of ARTLANDS Dubbo 2016.
