Sofala – Ryder Homestead Creative Poetry Weekend with Melinda Smith
Award-winning poet Melinda Smith was born and raised in the Central West and is returning to lead this very special weekend of inspiration, learning, and creativity.
Friday 19 – Sunday 21 October, 2018
Melinda’s work is known for its strong emotion, personal themes, engagement with history and varied use of forms and voices.
We will use the wonderful location of Sofala, its rich history, and its interesting landscape to inspire and give life to new poems. The weekend includes a guided walk, a bush walk, lots of time for exploring, note-taking and quiet writing as well as several face-to-face workshops at Ryder Homestead with Melinda spread over the Friday night, Saturday and Sunday.
The aim of the weekend is to produce several draft poems each, using the inspiring location and our own strong feelings and memories to get the work going. During the workshops we will continually refine our raw drafts, and Melinda will also cover several important tools for writing poems with impact. We will explore how to use sound and poetic form (including inventing our own), how to use emotion without becoming cloying, and some ways to experiment with different poetic voices.
All levels welcome – new poets, emerging poets, established poets, and former poets looking to reconnect
