Opportunity: Bathurst Regional Art Gallery Local Artist Project 2011 & 2012
Date of function: Applications close Wednesday March 31, 2010
Presenter: Bathurst Regional Art Gallery
Contact: 02 6333 6555
Description: Bathurst Regional Art Gallery is committed to showcasing the work of artists based in the region through its Local Artist Project initiative. BRAG’s Local Artist Project initiative provides professional development opportunities for artists living in the Central West by supporting the creation of new work and raising the profile of artists in the region. This year, David Lake (26 March – 16 May), Karen Golland (21 May – 1 July) and James Blackwell (3 December – 23 January 2011) each have solo exhibitions. Previous Local Artist Projects have included exhibitions by Spencer Calveley, Nicole Welch, Louise Ranshaw, Rachel Ellis, John Merkel, Raquel Mazzina and Hui Selwood. Download an application form: http://www.bathurstart.com.au/images/stories/Artists_Opportunities_for_2011__2012.pdf The Gallery is currently calling for proposals from local artists for exhibitions in 2011 and 2012. Proposals need to include an exhibition rationale which explores the themes or conceptual ideas which inform the artist’s practice, a current CV, and good quality images of the artist’s work. Due to the limited number of exhibition spaces available in our 2011 and 2012 programs it is anticipated that the application process will be extremely competitive. Key attributes to successful applications will include strong stylistic consistencies, a clear vision and demonstrated ability to deliver work of a high standard to deadline. Successful artists develop important skills and experience in developing work for exhibition, managing timelines and publication development. Applications are due by Wednesday 31 March 2010. It is recommended that artists interested in applying for Bathurst Regional Art Gallery’s 2011 and 2012 Local Art Project exhibitions contact the gallery to discuss their proposal prior to applying. For more information, contact the gallery on 6333 6555. Courage to Care
Date of function: 4 February to 21 March 2010
Presenter: Bathurst Regional Art Gallery
Contact: www.bathurst.nsw.gov.au
Description: Courage to Care returns to Bathurst Courage to Careis a major outreach program and travelling exhibition, designed to show people of all ages, all races and all persuasions that the individual can make a difference in a society which no longer cares, and that all of us has a personal responsibility to ourselves, our family and our community. Courage to Care is focused on bringing the message of racial tolerance and understanding to regional and rural Australia. Since its inception in the late 90s, Courage to Care has visited numerous towns and cities across Australia. This will be the second time that the exhibition has travelled to Bathurst Regional Art Gallery. The exhibition has been seen by over 135,000 people, including 50,000 school students. Transport for school groups to the exhibition is fully subsidised by Courage to Care thereby removing financial pressures on schools and parents and enabling students from across the region to experience this important education program. Courage to Care directly confronts racism and intolerance in Australia, initially through celebrating those courageous individuals who put their lives on the line to save Jews during the Holocaust, bringing home the reality of the Holocaust and the crimes against humanity perpetrated against the Jewish people. Through "Living in Harmony" workshops, the education program extends this message to issues of contemporary relevance to all visitors, and promoting understanding and harmony among minority groups. Over 1000 school children from across the region are expected to attend the Courage to Care education program in Bathurst. The exhibition be opened at 6pm on Thursday 4 February 2010 by Andrew Havas, Chairman of Courage to Care

Seduction and Subversion
Date of function: 4 February to 21 March 2010 The exhibition will be opened by Susi Muddiman, Director, Tweed River Art Gallery at 6pm Thursday 4 February.
Presenter: Bathurst Regional Art Gallery
Contact: www.bathurst.nsw.gov.au
Description: Seduction and Subversion: The art of James Guppy 1989 – 2009 is an exciting survey of works produced by renowned painter James Guppy and was developed by Tweed River Gallery in celebration of the 20th anniversary of his first professional solo exhibition. James Guppy is a prolific artist who investigates love and power, the body, physical identity, gender, sexuality and taboo – often with a surreal, humorous and absurdist twist. A resident of Byron Bay, Guppy’s dramatic work explores the broad social issues and the nightmares of life in the 21st century, as well as our inner secrets and private dreams. Guppy’s work is not easily categorised – he is a figurative painter, a sometimes-sculptor and a magic realist. His paintings are both postmodern and fetishistic, and often contain elements of his very quirky sense of humour. Incorporating over 50 private and public loans, this comprehensive survey show offers the breadth of Guppy’s oeuvre over a 20 year period. The exhibition will be opened by Susi Muddiman, Director, Tweed River Art Gallery at 6pm Thursday 4 February. A Tweed River Gallery Touring Exhibition

Description: Exhibition of paintings from our newest artist, Josephine Jagger-Manners. An exploration of the home and the comforts that are important to our lives. Sunday Luncheon with Michael Manners after Jayes Café from 1.00 pm (bookings essential 6366 8810) Josephine Jagger-Manners is a multi-award winning restaurateur and wife of the celebrated Michael Manners. Having retired as a restaurateur, and from the highly acclaimed Selkirks Restaurant, in 2007, Josephine is now able to pursue a life long desire to paint pictures. Self-taught, Josephine enjoys painting what she sees as snippets of country life and domesticity. Josephine’s first exhibition at her home in Molong NSW in 2009 was a great success. Viewers responded enthusiastically to her whimsical take on everyday life at home and in the garden. Josephine’s use of colour is always vibrant and reflects her lifestyle. For Josephine at present spending time painting from her home, surrounded by her large and prolific garden, truly is for her “Where the Heart Is!” Although Josephine is a new artist coming to her passion late in life, she has had a fair grounding in art early. Josephine won a scholarship to attend the selective girl’s school in Hartlepool N E England. Art became her major subject and she achieved 98% for Art/Art History in her GCE Exam (top 1% in Britain). Josephine remembers being influenced at that time by Turner, Cezanne and Gaughin. Josephine fondly remembers admiring Turner for his technique and wistful way with paint. She says “To me, every Turner picture that I looked at was magical and took me to an entirely new existence. I had only seen Turner’s works in books but my heart stood still and my knees became weak when I saw a Turner painting at the National Gallery at 18 years old” Josephine continues “I preferred the still life paintings of Cezanne to his landscapes. They represented country life and I was drawn to the feeling of human presence in the pictures even though not depicted. I have always liked Gaughin’s use of colour and particularly the vibrancy of his still life’s” The influences of those formative years are strongly present in these recent works making for an interesting combination of subject, colour and style.

TED LEWIS- LANDSCAPES IN OILS Essential techniques for the aspiring oil painter will be taught by Ted Lewis in this two day workshop. From colour choice to mixing, applying paint and composition, Ted will guide students through the processes of creating original art works from their own experiences of the Australian landscape Ted Lewis is a renowned artist having exhibited locally and nationally for many years. He offers a wide experience in the arts to his students and is keen to see artists evolve into excellence His ability to capture the light and vibrancy of the ever-changing landscapes in his own work is the skill that he can bring to your own art experience. Presenter: Fairview Artspace
Contact: Contact Veronica Burns on 6372 1387
Description: This day-long workshop will be an introduction to screen printing onto paper using water-based inks. Beginning with simple paper stencils; drawing or painting onto the screen; using various resists and combination techniques, you will see how easy it is to achieve a fascinating series of layered, complex prints with minimum equipment. You can prepare for the workshop by bringing ideas or ‘compositions’ of what you want to print. They should be images that allow for repeat printing, i.e. print over the previous print. The first print could be a light background colour with not much detail; the second print a darker colour with more detail but leaving some areas unprinted or with overprint etc. After three or four printings a complex and interesting image will be the final result. Because of restricted space the prints will be A4 size. Bring your lunch, lead pencil, stencil cutter, ruler, apron etc. All other material will be provided.

Description: It’s not how old you are, but how you are old. Force Majeure’s The Age I’m In is a poignant, witty and revealing portrait of how we inhabit the age we’re in throughout our lives. Woven together and brought to life by Force Majeure’s distinctive dance-theatre language, a diverse selection of Australians aged between fourteen and eighty offer astonishingly personal responses to a range of emotive issues, creating an intimate and warm-hearted snapshot of the ageing process. Under acclaimed director Kate Champion, this remarkable performance which won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Company at the 2009 Australian Dance Awards, skilfully combines audio visual technology, real-life interviews and a distinctive physical language to take a fresh and humorous look at generational clichés, family interactions and the complexity of human relationships.

Kings Castle Australian Qualifier for the 2010 Elvis World Cup
Date of function: Saturday March 27 & Sunday March 28
Description: Parkes, the Elvis Capital of Australia, will host the first ever Kings Castle Australian Qualifier for the 2010 Elvis World Cup, with Parkes tourist attraction 'The Kings Castle' becoming the major sponsor. The Elvis World Cup will take place in Cardiff, Wales in July 2010, and Parkes will host the only Australian Qualifying event. The World Cup will see sixteen national champions compete for the coveted crown, including an Australian representative. Other countries to be represented in Wales next year include: Brazil, Canada, England, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malta, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, United States of America, Venezuela and Wales. The Kings Castle Australian Qualifier will be held in Parkes over the weekend of 27th and 28th March 2010, in the Auditorium of the Parkes Leagues Club. The Kings Castle Elvis Collection is a logical sponsor for this event, both having ties to Elvis and World Cup Qualifier organisers are very pleased to welcome the Kings Castle on board. According to Parkes Elvis Festival Coordinator Ellie Ruffoni, "Elvis Tribute Artists who are Australian Citizens, or perform professionally in Australia (more than anywhere else) are invited to enter the Australian Qualifier, with the winner catapulted to Wales to compete against the best of the best from around the world". Judges will be looking for an Elvis Tribute Artist that delivers the best overall Elvis package, judging in areas of vocals, appearance, stage presence and overall performance. The judges scores will be boosted by audience participation by way of a people's choice vote. "It is strange to think that when Elvis died in 1977, there were only 170 Tribute Artists worldwide, and there are now more than 85,000 (source: Wikipedia). Surely out of that 85,000 - we can find a star packed Aussie" said Ellie. Winning the Kings Castle Australian Qualifier is the only way that an Australian Elvis Tribute Artist can compete at the World Cup in Wales. Parkes Shire Tourism Manager Kelly Hendry is excited about this new event, "For Parkes to host the only Australian Qualifier of this event is very significant. The World Cup Qualifier will complement the range of Elvis activities that Parkes has become famous for and should attract a good number of visitors to Parkes for both spectating and competing purposes". The Australian winner selected at Parkes will win a trip to the World Cup event in Wales in July 2010 to fly the Aussie Elvis flag. Entry to the Kings Castle Australian Qualifier will open soon, with details to be added to the Parkes Elvis website: www.parkeselvisfestival.com.au

Tullamore Irish Festival 2010
Date of function: April 1-4, 2010
Presenter: Tullamore Irish Festival
Contact: Robert Edwards, Festival Coordinator
Contact details: 02 6893 7229
Description: The 2010 Tullamore Irish Festival will be held over the Easter long weekend from 1st – 4th April with and impressive line up of Irish Entertainers including award winning bands, entertainers and dancers taking to the stage on the main day, Saturday 3rd April. In early 1992 Jimmy Moore, a highly respected Irish musician formed the successful Sydney-based group Claddagh. The current line-up includes original member and Band Leader Jimmy Moore, with Leon Delander and Jimmy Closs. Each member plays a range of instruments, and their powerful harmonies and sensitive musicianship produces an irresistible satisfying and unquestionably Irish sound. International artist Maria Forde makes her return to the Festival stage to entertain festival goers. Maria has always included both sides of her heritage in her song writing, incorporating her Irish origins and observations of Australia to create the beautiful lyrics of songs like 'Waltzing Matilda, My Darling' a song about the spirit of the immigrants torn between their country of birth and their adopted land, Australia. The entertainment also includes Eileen McCann who performs in traditional Irish costume all the Irish favourites including Danny Boy and her not to be missed toe-tapping jigs and reels on the fiddle. Clare O’Meara, member of the legendary ‘Bushwackers’ will appear on the Festival stage. Clare is renowned as Australia’s premier female fiddle player and will have the crowds up doing an Irish jig or two! Steve Passfield and ‘Handpicked’ will again be in Tullamore to perform at the festival village and the bowling club. New to the festival are performers from the Dwyer-Whelan School of Irish Dance of Sydney. Beginning in 1955, the school has a long association with the Irish National Association in Surry Hills. Not only do the dancers compete every year at the Australian championships, but the Academy's Irish National Dancers travel to international championships such as the All Ireland, World and North American Championships. Come and enjoy the line-up of Irish entertainers and the fun and games at the Tullamore Irish festival 2010.
