BRAG’s Local Artist Project initiative provides professional development opportunities for artists living in the Central West by supporting the creation of new work and raising the profile of artists in the region. This year, David Lake (26 March – 16 May), Karen Golland (21 May – 1 July) and James Blackwell (3 December – 23 January 2011) each have solo exhibitions. Previous Local Artist Projects have included exhibitions by Spencer Calveley, Nicole Welch, Louise Ranshaw, Rachel Ellis, John Merkel, Raquel Mazzina and Hui Selwood. Download an application form: http://www.bathurstart.com.au/images/stories/Artists_Opportunities_for_2011__2012.pdf The Gallery is currently calling for proposals from local artists for exhibitions in 2011 and 2012. Proposals need to include an exhibition rationale which explores the themes or conceptual ideas which inform the artist’s practice, a current CV, and good quality images of the artist’s work. Due to the limited number of exhibition spaces available in our 2011 and 2012 programs it is anticipated that the application process will be extremely competitive. Key attributes to successful applications will include strong stylistic consistencies, a clear vision and demonstrated ability to deliver work of a high standard to deadline. Successful artists develop important skills and experience in developing work for exhibition, managing timelines and publication development. Applications are due by Wednesday 31 March 2010. It is recommended that artists interested in applying for Bathurst Regional Art Gallery’s 2011 and 2012 Local Art Project exhibitions contact the gallery to discuss their proposal prior to applying. For more information, contact the gallery on 6333 6555. Courage to Care is focused on bringing the message of racial tolerance and understanding to regional and rural Australia. Since its inception in the late 90s, Courage to Care has visited numerous towns and cities across Australia. This will be the second time that the exhibition has travelled to Bathurst Regional Art Gallery. The exhibition has been seen by over 135,000 people, including 50,000 school students. Transport for school groups to the exhibition is fully subsidised by Courage to Care thereby removing financial pressures on schools and parents and enabling students from across the region to experience this important education program. Courage to Care directly confronts racism and intolerance in Australia, initially through celebrating those courageous individuals who put their lives on the line to save Jews during the Holocaust, bringing home the reality of the Holocaust and the crimes against humanity perpetrated against the Jewish people. Through "Living in Harmony" workshops, the education program extends this message to issues of contemporary relevance to all visitors, and promoting understanding and harmony among minority groups. Over 1000 school children from across the region are expected to attend the Courage to Care education program in Bathurst. Presenter: Bathurst Regional Art Gallery Contact: www.bathurst.nsw.gov.au Description: Seduction and Subversion: The art of James Guppy 1989 – 2009 is an exciting survey of works produced by renowned painter James Guppy and was developed by Tweed River Gallery in celebration of the 20th anniversary of his first professional solo exhibition. James Guppy is a prolific artist who investigates love and power, the body, physical identity, gender, sexuality and taboo – often with a surreal, humorous and absurdist twist. A resident of Byron Bay, Guppy’s dramatic work explores the broad social issues and the nightmares of life in the 21st century, as well as our inner secrets and private dreams. Guppy’s work is not easily categorised – he is a figurative painter, a sometimes-sculptor and a magic realist. His paintings are both postmodern and fetishistic, and often contain elements of his very quirky sense of humour. Incorporating over 50 private and public loans, this comprehensive survey show offers the breadth of Guppy’s oeuvre over a 20 year period. The exhibition will be opened by Susi Muddiman, Director, Tweed River Art Gallery at 6pm Thursday 4 February. Presenter: Jayes Gallery Contact: Jayes Gallery 63669093 www.jayes.com.au Description: Exhibition of paintings from our newest artist, Josephine Jagger-Manners. An exploration of the home and the comforts that are important to our lives. Sunday Luncheon with Michael Manners after Jayes Café from 1.00 pm (bookings essential 6366 8810) Josephine Jagger-Manners is a multi-award winning restaurateur and wife of the celebrated Michael Manners. Having retired as a restaurateur, and from the highly acclaimed Selkirks Restaurant, in 2007, Josephine is now able to pursue a life long desire to paint pictures. Self-taught, Josephine enjoys painting what she sees as snippets of country life and domesticity. Josephine’s first exhibition at her home in Molong NSW in 2009 was a great success. Viewers responded enthusiastically to her whimsical take on everyday life at home and in the garden. Josephine’s use of colour is always vibrant and reflects her lifestyle. For Josephine at present spending time painting from her home, surrounded by her large and prolific garden, truly is for her “Where the Heart Is!” Although Josephine is a new artist coming to her passion late in life, she has had a fair grounding in art early. Josephine won a scholarship to attend the selective girl’s school in Hartlepool N E England. Art became her major subject and she achieved 98% for Art/Art History in her GCE Exam (top 1% in Britain). Josephine remembers being influenced at that time by Turner, Cezanne and Gaughin. Josephine fondly remembers admiring Turner for his technique and wistful way with paint. She says “To me, every Turner picture that I looked at was magical and took me to an entirely new existence. I had only seen Turner’s works in books but my heart stood still and my knees became weak when I saw a Turner painting at the National Gallery at 18 years old” Josephine continues “I preferred the still life paintings of Cezanne to his landscapes. They represented country life and I was drawn to the feeling of human presence in the pictures even though not depicted. I have always liked Gaughin’s use of colour and particularly the vibrancy of his still life’s” The influences of those formative years are strongly present in these recent works making for an interesting combination of subject, colour and style. Since established in 1991 these awards aim to honour Banjo Paterson, a great Australian writer and favourite son of Orange, with a competition to foster writing of prose or poetry with Australian content. Banjo is most famous for writing the ballad Waltzing Matilda and the poem The Man From Snowy River. The first print could be a light background colour with not much detail; the second print a darker colour with more detail but leaving some areas unprinted or with overprint etc. After three or four printings a complex and interesting image will be the final result. The Elvis World Cup will take place in Cardiff, Wales in July 2010, and Parkes will host the only Australian Qualifying event. The World Cup will see sixteen national champions compete for the coveted crown, including an Australian representative. Other countries to be represented in Wales next year include: Brazil, Canada, England, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malta, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, United States of America, Venezuela and Wales. The Kings Castle Australian Qualifier will be held in Parkes over the weekend of 27th and 28th March 2010, in the Auditorium of the Parkes Leagues Club. The Kings Castle Elvis Collection is a logical sponsor for this event, both having ties to Elvis and World Cup Qualifier organisers are very pleased to welcome the Kings Castle on board. According to Parkes Elvis Festival Coordinator Ellie Ruffoni, "Elvis Tribute Artists who are Australian Citizens, or perform professionally in Australia (more than anywhere else) are invited to enter the Australian Qualifier, with the winner catapulted to Wales to compete against the best of the best from around the world". Judges will be looking for an Elvis Tribute Artist that delivers the best overall Elvis package, judging in areas of vocals, appearance, stage presence and overall performance. The judges scores will be boosted by audience participation by way of a people's choice vote. "It is strange to think that when Elvis died in 1977, there were only 170 Tribute Artists worldwide, and there are now more than 85,000 (source: Wikipedia). Surely out of that 85,000 - we can find a star packed Aussie" said Ellie. Winning the Kings Castle Australian Qualifier is the only way that an Australian Elvis Tribute Artist can compete at the World Cup in Wales. Parkes Shire Tourism Manager Kelly Hendry is excited about this new event, "For Parkes to host the only Australian Qualifier of this event is very significant. The World Cup Qualifier will complement the range of Elvis activities that Parkes has become famous for and should attract a good number of visitors to Parkes for both spectating and competing purposes". The Australian winner selected at Parkes will win a trip to the World Cup event in Wales in July 2010 to fly the Aussie Elvis flag. The entertainment also includes Eileen McCann who performs in traditional Irish costume all the Irish favourites including Danny Boy and her not to be missed toe-tapping jigs and reels on the fiddle.
