Fri April 27 at 9:00 am - Sun May 20 at 5:00 pm

Varuna the National Writers’ House is hosting exciting Sydney Writers’ Festival events in Katoomba, the Blue Mountains, featuring bestselling national and international writers. The festival also gives the community a chance to hone their writing skills with a selection of workshops and panel discussions.

Festival: 27-30 April, 2018

For starters, on Friday 27 April visit the Varuna House itself, a local gem of literary significance, offering the opportunity to kick-start your memoir or creative non-fiction writing with writers Madeline Oliver and Viv Lewis. In the evening the Festival will officially launch with extraordinary poet and musician Kate Fagan, with the historic Varuna house as set and backdrop.

Saturday 28 April begins with a treat for the kids at Katoomba library. The well-loved character of Grug will make a special appearance followed by Australia’s renowned children’s author Emily Rodda of Deltora Quest fame. Young readers will have a chance to tap into their creative genius with Tobhy Riddle’s workshop Good Thinking, Good Writing.

Saturday’s program then gets serious at Blue Mountains Cultural Centre with climate scientist Dr Joelle Gergis and Chief Economist of The Australia Institute Richard Denniss in conversation with Gregg Borchmann from RN Breakfast, a session sure to challenge the way you think. Then uncover Western Sydney’s vibrant writing scene featuring three rising stars Omar Sakr, Rawah Arja and Stephen Pham.

Sunday will be a celebration of poetry at Varuna House with Eileen Chong taking participants on a tasty exploration of poets and their food obsessions. This will be followed by the Poetry Circle, one of the most well-loved traditions in the festival program.

On Monday 30 April the Festival moves into the Carrington with a full-day program set to inspire, motivate and excite. American author Tara Westover will tell of her amazing journey from growing up as a survivalist cult member to graduating with a PhD from Cambridge. Indonesian writer Dias Novita Wuri will discuss feminist perspectives with writer and editor Zoya Patel.  Michelle de Kretser will discuss her new novel The Life to Come tackling Australian identity and two-time winner of the Miles Franklin Award, Kim Scott will join Caitlin Maling to discuss his latest work Taboo. Eddie Ayres, previously known as Emma Ayres, host of Classic FM from 2008-2014, will bring the festival to a close with what promises to be rich discussion of music, adventure, gender and transformation, as revealed in his new book Danger Music.
