Bathurst’s Heritage the Focus in Autumn
Sat May 5 at 9:00 am - Sun May 13 at 5:00 pm
Bathurst will celebrate its position as Australia’s oldest European inland settlement this autumn with the ‘Autumn Colours’ Heritage Tours program, Heritage week from 5-13 May and the return of the Bathurst Heritage Trades trail on 12-13 May.
Autumn is traditionally the time when the Bathurst region focuses upon its rich and fascinating past, with many of the region’s historic sights brought to life through a series of tours and activities. These provide a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes and discover the moments, events and characters that make up the story of Bathurst. The 2018 Heritage tours series will begin following the Easter long weekend on 2 April.
Mayor Graeme Hanger OAM said the annual events and activities were important as well as the entertainment for the community.
“Bathurst has played a major part in the history of Australia, and the city and surrounding villages are so rich with amazing stories.” he said.
“It is important to explore our own past, and the heritage activities on offer throughout autumn across the Bathurst region offer an exciting way to do just that.”
Heritage Week will begin with Proclamation Day on Sunday 6 May and conclude with the two-day Heritage Trades Trail, a celebration of rare trades and craftsmanship with displays and demonstrations at five of Bathurst’s heritage venues.
“The Trades Trail attracted almost a thousand visitors in its first year,” Mayor Hanger said.
“It shows just how strong interest is in our region’s cultural heritage and in the importance of showcasing these traditional skills and crafts”.
A program of all heritage tours and activities will be available online and as a printed booklet from the Bathurst Visitor Information Centre and select Bathurst retailers in mid-March.
