Australian Poetry Slam Heats: BATHURST POETRY SLAM
Thu August 15 at 6:30 pmFREE
Australian Poetry Slam is a live literary performance program where the audience decides the champion. With a nationwide round of 60 heats, the best slammers will perform for the chance to win the Australian Poetry Slam National Final at Sydney Opera House as part of Story-Fest. The ultimate prize? An all expenses paid international tour, performing at Byron Writers Festival, Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, Singapore Writers Festival, Hong Kong International Literary Festival, Banff Arts Centre and Blue Metropolis Festival.
Australian Poetry Slam began in 2005 and has since grown into an internationally renowned poetry slam. APS has presented over 1000 spoken word artists, bringing their words from all corners of the globe to an audience of over 20,000 within the Asia-Pacific region. As one of the largest initiatives of Word Travels, the International Performing Writers’ Centre, APS touches rural and urban communities in Australia, China, Indonesia and New Zealand, inspiring a love of poetry and catapulting spoken word artists onto an international stage.
As well as APS, Word Travels delivers spoken word events throughout the year including: Story-Fest, Multilingual Poetry Slam, Australian Poetry Slam Youth and bespoke events and workshops for schools, companies and organisations.
Last year, Melanie Mununggurr-Williams was crowned the first ever indigenous Australian Poetry Slam Champion at the National Final at Sydney Opera House, the closing event of Story-Fest ’18.
Catch the raw and witty, vulnerable and downright gritty voices of the world’s best wordsmiths, live at Australian Poetry Slam.
The sign up for every slam opens half an hour before each slam begins at the host venue (unless otherwise stated). It doesn’t matter whether you’re a first-time performer or a spoken word aficionado – just rock up ready to write down your name and give a breathtaking performance.
Performing writers are given a microphone, a live audience, and just two minutes to capture the crowd.
The host selects five judges at random from the crowd. After each performance, judges hold up score cards using a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the highest. Of the five scores for each poet, only the middle three scores are counted. The judges’ decisions are final.
Whether you’re a poet or an audience member, you can be part of the search for the next slam champion.
Stage 1: Heats
50 heats run across Australia in city spaces and regional venues. Two performers from each heat are chosen by their audiences as local slam champions.
Stage 2: Finals
Local slam champions are invited to Regional, Territory or State Finals. Audiences at the Finals choose two powerful wordsmiths to head to Sydney, to compete at the Australian Poetry Slam National Final at Sydney Opera House.
Stage 3: National Final
The audience picks one performing writer to represent Australian Poetry Slam on an international tour.
Stage 4: International Tour
The Australian Poetry Slam Champion is sent on tour to the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival, Singapore Writers Festival and Hong Kong International Literary Festival.
