Arts and Health program: overview

The development and support of arts within the health and disability sectors in the Central West is a key area of project work for Arts OutWest.

Background

Arts OutWest’s Arts and Health program began in 2008. Projects have included Aboriginal arts and health programs, community arts projects, research, skills development and exhibitions for people with disabilities, forums exploring arts and disabilities partnerships for the region, and a major pilot program to embed arts activity within the re-developed Bathurst Health Service.

Award winning

In November 2012 Arts OutWest won, for the second year in a row, the Arts and Health Australia International Award for ‘Arts and Health in Regional and Rural Australia’. Christine McMillan accepted this award at the 2012 Arts and Health Conference in Freemantle, Western Australia, where she had also been invited to present on the Look Art Talk project.
In 2013 Bathurst Regional Art Gallery won a Museums & Galleries NSW IMAGiNE Award for the partnership project with Arts OutWest, Look Art Talk.

RAISE

2014: Arts OutWest has been invited to participate in the UK based project RAISE, which engages people with a disability in the arts via performance and video technologies.

Parkes and Forbes hospital redevelopments

Christine is liaising with Health Service staff on the potential integration of arts and health programs and design into the redeveloped hospital sites in Forbes and Parkes. She is also working with health services in the Weddin Shire.

Bathurst Health Service program

Launched 2008 and based on out Bathurst Health Service, the program integrates arts activities into the health services including palliative care, mental health, disability services, Aboriginal maternal and infant health as well as the general environment of the hospital. Projects have included the creation of large scale public art, regular exhibitions, an art acquisition program, arts activities for health service clients, and music and performance.
